Dr. Mae C. Jemison made history in August 1992 as the first Black female astronaut to travel into space. But her journey started in medicine; after earning her M.D. from Cornell in 1981, she researched vaccines with the CDC before taking her talents to the stars.

Aboard the shuttle Endeavour, she “elevated” her medical research by conducting groundbreaking experiments in life sciences and materials processing in zero gravity. 🌌

This Black History Month, we honor Charles Richard Drew, a surgeon and medical researcher whose work transformed modern medicine.

Dr. Drew pioneered large-scale blood storage and plasma preservation techniques, laying the foundation for modern blood banks and saving countless lives during World War II and beyond. His research reshaped transfusion medicine and continues to impact patient care today.

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science proudly carries his name in honor of his scientific excellence and commitment to health equity.

His legacy lives on in every hospital, every trauma bay, and every life saved through transfusion medicine.

To wrap up Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our PHR Co-Leads of the Gender and Sexual Based Violence Committee tabled at CDU’s Drew Cares 4th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Health Fair on Thursday, October 30th, 2025, at MLK Jr. Community Hospital. They spoke with a range of community members about the intersection between domestic violence and persons with breast cancer, as well as the importance of proper healthcare worker awareness and education in supporting Domestic Violence survivors.
