U.S Africa Institute x LA County Department of Mental Health

The U.S.-Africa Institute is a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening ties between the United States and Africa by supporting education, advocacy, and community engagement. As part of its mission, the Institute works with pro bono immigration attorneys who provide guidance and legal support for students. While their primary focus is uplifting the diaspora communities, they also extend their services broadly, recognizing how recent changes in U.S. immigration policy affect a wide range of students and families.

We, the Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), established a partnership with the LA County Department of Mental Health and the U.S.-Africa Institute, launching a six-month series of five webinars and one panel discussion. These sessions explored the intersection of immigration policy, mental health, and healthcare practice. Topics included how shifting immigration regulations impact students and their families, ripple effects on healthcare policy, malpractice considerations, and the broader legal and social challenges faced by immigrant communities.
